Self-drive
Driving in New Zealand is easy, offering greater flexibility in seeing the country. A range of vehicles are available for hire; small and compact for economy, large saloons for comfort on long driving days, or 4WDs for the off-road experience.

Ferries
Ferries operate several times a day between Wellington on the North Island to Picton on the South Island, carrying foot passengers and vehicles. Taking 3-4 hours it also provides an opportunity to experience a small section of the Marlborough Sounds.

Train
Train journeys in New Zealand offer an alternative window from which to view the countryside. Take the Overlander from Wellington to Auckland, or the hugely popular TranzAlpine from Christchurch to Greymouth.

Internal Flights
Flying between major centres can save days of travel when time is limited, and can often be more economical than driving. Air New Zealand operates between all major towns with flights often several times a day.

Private Plane or Helicopter
For travellers on a tight timeframe private plane or helicopter transfers allow you to maximise your time in the country. Many luxury lodges have helipads enabling you to be picked up and dropped off directly from your accommodation.
